Hayward is a thriving city of more than 120,000 people on the
eastern edge- the bright side- of the San Francisco Bay. Established as a
trading center by William Hayward during the California Gold Rush, the City of
Hayward remains on the crossroads of the Bay Area- a diverse center for retail,
industry and government activities. Here, people of many cultures are working
to build a community with opportunity for all. Hayward combines a hometown
atmosphere, an ideal climate, cultural attractions, local parks and
recreational facilities, with easy access to suppliers and customers throughout
the Bay Area and beyond.

"Hayward's central location is one of its major assets.
Serviced by an extensive network of freeways and rail lines, and within close
proximity to three major airports and the Port of Oakland, businesses in
Hayward easily reach vital markets throughout the Bay Area, California, and
beyond." - Dennis Cuneo, Vice President, NUMMI, a joint venture of
General Motors and Toyota.
Hayward is located in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area,
just minutes from three major metropolitan areas - San Francisco, San Jose and
Oakland - three international airports, and the Port of Oakland. With an
extensive network of freeways and rail lines, Hayward is the main gateway from
Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Peninsula to Oakland, Berkeley and
Sacramento as well as to the fast-growing San Joaquin Valley communities. This
transportation network makes Hayward an excellent location for reaching vital
markets throughout California, the US and the Pacific Rim.

Cross country and worldwide travel is easy and convenient.
Oakland International Airport is 15 miles away, 25 miles to the south is the
San Jose International Airport. Closer to home, the City operates the Hayward
Air Terminal, the premier general aviation reliever airport for San Francisco
and Oakland. The Air Terminal has two parallel runways of 3,100 and 5,000 feet
each, aircraft storage hangars, aviation services, and the lowest fuel prices
in the area with three companies from which to choose.
Highways: Hayward has excellent access to markets within
the Bay Area and to major routes extending through northern and southern
California. Interstates 880, 580, and State Highways 238 and 92 converge in
Hayward. The Hayward-San Mateo Bridge provides access to Silicon Valley to the
south and San Francisco to the north. To the northeast, I-880 connects with the
main route to Sacramento. To the southeast are connections to San Jose and Los
Angeles. I-580 is the gateway east to I-5 and I-99, the primary north-south
routes in central California. The San Joaquin Valley communities of Modesto,
Fresno, and Stockton are easy to reach from Hayward.
Railroad and Trucking: The Southern Pacific, Union
Pacific, and Western Pacific Railroads lines run through Hayward with
connecting rail spurs to many industrial sites. Additionally, Hayward is a
scheduled passenger stop of Amtrak's Capitol Corridor line from Sacramento to
San Jose with eight trains each day. In addition, over 100 truck lines and
carriers provide service to Hayward.
Public Transportation: Hayward's two Bay Area Rapid
Transit (BART) stations provide quick and easy access to the major cities
surrounding the San Francisco Bay. BART connects to a variety of other public
transit, including the AC Transit and SamTrans bus systems and the CalTrain and
Amtrak commuter railways.
Infrastructure: Sound infrastructure planning has allowed
Hayward to have very competitive water rates and facilities fees. Hayward
maintains the lowest possible fees and service charges to better serve business
and residential users. Hayward's sewer system is one of the most efficient
systems in the Bay Area, with enough capacity to meet the City's needs well
into the next century. Sewer connection fees are also very reasonable- with no
hidden assessment charges. text.
Land Availability: Hayward has a large, well-planned
industrial area with a wide variety of opportunities to lease or build
facilities at advantageous rates. And 95% of our tilt-up buildings are
seismically retrofitted. Did you know that prior to 1906 the Hayward Fault was
known as the San Francisco Fault? Only building permits are needed to build or
expand in industrial parks. With over 2,500 acres and 40 industrial and
business parks, our industrial area is designed for light and heavy
manufacturing, research and development, and sales and distribution activities.
The terrain is level and drainage is good, with sub soils composed of sandy
clays and gravels with adobe. Pilings are generally not required in the area.
Approximately 500 acres are available for development. And guess what- we have
no utility tax!
 |
Markets: Hayward provides a variety of goods and services
to residents and local businesses. We are within a 30-minutes drive of much of
the Bay Area. Business to business sales in the areas of electronics, office
equipment, business services, energy sales, chemical products, heavy and light
industry, building materials and leasing are substantial. Automobile buyers
throughout the Bay Area have made Hayward an important market. Retail apparel,
furniture, appliances, toys, and home electronics prosper in Hayward. Southland
Mall, located by I-880, is one of the busiest malls in the area and home to
Mervyn's new flagship store.

Hayward has a pedestrian-friendly downtown of two story buildings
with a mix of housing, retail shops, offices and restaurants. Downtown is
the site of the Saturday Farmer's Market. Celebrations throughout the year
include the Blues and Brew, Celebrations of Nations, and Art and Wine
festivals. We are currently developing a Civic Center complete with government
offices, retail stores and condominiums adjoining the downtown BART station.
Across from the Civic Center, 83 town homes, the first phase of 250 new
residences, have been built.

Hayward is able to provide housing that meets your needs - from
inexpensive homes in quiet, older neighborhoods, to elegant homes in the
Hayward Hills. Approximately 64% of Hayward's housing stock is ownership -
single-family detached homes, town homes, and condominiums. Hayward's rental
housing ranges from luxury rentals with tennis courts, swimming pools, exercise
facilities and other amenities, to relatively modest apartments. Prices are
quite affordable, particularly for the Bay Area.

Education: Hayward is unique among Easy Bay cities in
having an educational system that takes students from kindergarten to college
graduation. Hayward is home to Chabot, a community college and to California
State University at Hayward (CSUH), a leader in multimedia technology. CSUH has
one of the top business schools in the State system and is a training ground
for entrepreneurs from Russia and China. Did you know Hayward's relationship
with Russia began in the 1870's when one of the first Russian English
newspapers was published in Hayward? Both Chabot and CSUH work closely with
employers to tailor training programs for employers. We have a myriad of other
educational resources- business colleges, a Regional Occupation Program, and
various technical training programs- to expedite the transition from school to
work. The University of California, Berkeley; the University of California, San
Francisco; and Stanford University are nearby.
 |
Parks & Arts: We are proud of our parks, arts groups,
historical roots and resources. Our recreational and cultural attractions make
Hayward a good place to live, as well as a good place to work. The Shoreline
Interpretive Center and the Japanese Tea Garden are unique to Hayward. We have
many parks, swim centers, an arts center, tennis courts, a rodeo arena, and a
greenbelt trail. Skywest, our professionally rated 18-hole golf course, is "one
of the best municipal golf courses in the East Bay" according to the San
Francisco Business Times.
